Results of an international survey of higher education reveal that academic video creation and consumption with Mediasite is growing exponentially on college campuses.
The survey reveals that in 2013:
- Two million hours of academic video were created with Mediasite — the equivalent of 228 years of video
- A Mediasite video is watched every second, which is more than 30 million views each year
- Mediasite video views on campus outpace consumer video consumption by 59 percent
- Mediasite views are growing 89 percent year over year, and Mediasite content creation is growing 49 percent year over year

- AppStore downloads of the Mediasite Mobile app have surpassed 100,000
- Students are increasingly watching from mobile devices. Viewing on iPads, iPhones and Androids is up 44 percent, 44 percent and 55 percent respectively
Mediasite use is expected to grow even more with the adoption of student- and faculty-creation portals using My Mediasite. In fact, My Mediasite adoption has grown 522 percent since it was introduced last year.
“In 2013 we shot the moon. We saw increased viewership of 215 percent with over 1.3 million views in the calendar year. And we do not anticipate our growth to slow down at all,” said Brian Smith, IT specialist, University of Florida. “With last year’s rollout of My Mediasite we look forward to opening the door to more users creating more content than ever before.”
In just 12 months, Bloomsburg University created more than 1,300 Mediasite videos — over 700 hours of content — garnering 12,000 views.
“With all of this user-generated content, two mobile Mediasite Recorders, five permanently integrated Mediasite systems and a portable production system, we have seen the use of rich media grow in all four of our colleges, as well as student affairs, administration and external clients,” said Asa Kelley, media technician, Bloomsburg University.
Other campuses with significant growth of Mediasite usage from 2012 to 2013 are:
- University of Florida — 305 percent increase in videos created
- Louisiana Tech University — 384 percent increase in videos created
- University of Connecticut — 982 percent increase in views
- University of California-San Francisco — 85 percent increase in views
- Portland Community College — 50 percent increase in views
- Delft University of Technology — 3 million total views since it began using Mediasite
