MADISON, Wis. – January 12, 2009 – Sonic Foundry, Inc. (NASDAQ: SOFO), the recognized market leader for rich media webcasting and knowledge management, today announced the Fox School of Business at Temple University has selected Mediasite as the class capture platform for the newly constructed Alter Hall (http://www.fox.temple.edu/alter), its $80 million business school facility opening January 20.
Every lecture in the seven story, 217,000-square-foot building will be streamed with Mediasite RL Recorders, which are installed in each of its 30 classrooms in Alter and adjoining Speakman Hall. Two mobile Mediasite ML Recorders are available for offsite webcasting needs. A massive multi-imaging video wall measuring 15 feet by 5 feet at the building’s entrance can stream real-time Mediasite lectures to draw visitors into the educational experience.
“Alter Hall was the first facility at Temple designed with course capture in mind. We’ve established very stringent performance expectations in the last few years and with our selection of Sonic Foundry, we know we’re doing business with the most established, highly productive academic capture organization in the world,” said David Feeney, Director of Digital Education at Fox School of Business. “Mediasite has helped put us in the position to leverage ourselves as a worldwide operation, working 24/7, right out of the box.”
“We’ve used other lecture capture systems, but when we decided to adopt on a larger scale we looked at the evolution of Mediasite. We wanted the advanced features to stream live, the confidence in monitoring and the searchable nature of the content. Mediasite is a strong and solid platform that meets our financial needs and is scalable as we move into our new building,” said John DeAngelo, Assistant Dean of Instructional Technology at Fox School of Business. “Now that we have the ability to stream live for the first time, we have instructors interested in reaching students both in the classroom and offsite simultaneously. Mediasite opens up new opportunities for us to spread Fox education everywhere.”
Designed by world-renowned architect Michael Graves, Alter Hall is the culmination of the school’s “Building Fox, Transforming Lives” campaign, launched to initiate a new era of learning on campus. By providing a state-of-the-art technology environment and the latest methods in teaching and learning, Temple seeks to attract the highest quality students, expand key research centers and enhance relationships with alumni and corporate partners.
In addition to Mediasite for course capture, tiered case study rooms are equipped with two projectors, two screens, ambient miking, a “follow-cam”, wireless Internet and power at each desk. Larger rooms integrate Mediasite with video conferencing technology and taskless voice amplification and recording. Group work is facilitated by seats that swivel 360 degrees and a modular computing set up in information system labs. Podiums are height adjustable, equipped with a computer, a tablet to capture an instructor’s handwritten notes and audio, video and lighting controls with a memorization feature for the settings of each class. Network-based control systems allow smart classroom management including opening and closing rooms, AV/computer troubleshooting and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) communication to the control room.
“Fox School of Business sought to create a learning environment that was synonymous with the quality of its educational programs, and we are proud to be their technology partner, particularly during this phase of sweeping progress,” said Rimas Buinevicius, chairman and CEO of Sonic Foundry. “With its enterprise deployment of Mediasite, the Fox School at Temple University is an excellent example of the growing trend for wide scale lecture capture, pioneering an unprecedented level of collaboration and knowledge-sharing among its students, faculty and individuals worldwide.”
The patented Mediasite webcasting and content management system quickly and cost-effectively automates the capture, management, delivery and search of rich media presentations that combine audio, video and accompanying graphics for live or on-demand viewing.
With our higher education Mediasite community now topping 600 colleges and universities, Sonic Foundry is highlighting customer stories that exemplify the convergence of technology and education.
