University of California San Francisco Webcasts Over Two Thousand Classes in 10 Months via Mediasite Lecture Capture Technology

Blended learning embraced with open arms as academic streaming videos receive 63,000 views from students

Las Vegas, Nev., InfoComm Booth #C9141 — June 14, 2012 — Sonic Foundry, Inc. (NASDAQ: SOFO), the trusted market leader for lecture capture, enterprise and event webcasting, today announced that the University of California San Francisco’s selection of Mediasite as its lecture capture and video content management platform has received positive feedback from faculty and students alike.

“Mediasite exceeded all of our expectations and worked immediately once we went live,” said John DeAngelo, director of educational technology services at UCSF and former associate dean for information technology in Temple’s Fox School of Business.

With 3,500 graduate medical students and health professionals, UCSF is a leading university dedicated to promoting health worldwide through graduate-level education in the life sciences and health professions.

In the spring of 2011, after a failed lecture capture launch with another vendor, UCSF switched to Mediasite by Sonic Foundry. The school was seeking a platform with a robust video content management system, the ability to stream live lectures to mobile devices and easy integration for rapid deployment. UCSF has now webcasted 2,050 Mediasite presentations in just 10 months with 63,000 views, making it the largest number of classes DeAngelo has recorded in such a short amount of time.

“I’ve been struck by the degree by which Mediasite has been embraced at UCSF, but I understand why because the material taught in class is dense, very complex. The most valuable thing in a medical education is time. Mediasite allows students to be able to watch and listen to lectures and other presentations at their convenience,” DeAngelo said. “Faculty adoption of Mediasite lecture capture is also very high due to its ease of use. Instructors don’t have to change their behavior. All I had to do was ask them ‘Would you like to come on board, do nothing, and we capture all your instruction?’ It was just that easy. We chose Mediasite because of its history, because of the quality of the staff and the support and the solidness of the product. Mediasite has the best video management system out there.”

During his nearly decade-long dive into educational technology, DeAngelo has outfitted hundreds of classrooms. While designing the installations of some the largest lecture capture projects in the country, he found Mediasite to be the most robust and scalable platform. He previously oversaw the large-scale implementation of Mediasite at Temple University Fox School of Business, again displacing another lecture capture tool.

DeAngelo recently presented a webinar, “Are All Classroom Capture Systems the Same?,” which can be viewed on-demand at www.sonicfoundry.com/JohnDeAngelo. He is also presenting “Audiovisual Technology Planning for Higher Education” during InfoComm 2012 on Thursday, June 14 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

“We are honored that UCSF chose Mediasite to capture more classes with less time and staff,” said Gary Weis, chief executive officer for Sonic Foundry. “The university’s educational technology decisions, guided by DeAngelo’s extensive expertise in comparing lecture capture technology platforms, have paved the way for countless hours of classroom knowledge to be studied, archived and managed, setting the standard for what can be accomplished with a large-scale lecture capture installation.”

Trusted by more than 1,000 colleges and universities, the patented Mediasite webcasting and video content management system quickly and cost-effectively automates the capture, management, delivery and search of live and on-demand streaming videos and rich media presentations that combine video with slides.
